Now you have to pay to get ads! Because paid tier gets ads anyway for Crunchyroll products with no way to turn that crap off. Huzzah!
Oh, I legitimately wasn’t aware there was a free tier. I dropped them right around when the Funimation shuffle happened.
Its been less and less useful over the last few years anyway. Time to just bust out that eyepatch.
Seems like they’ve been getting less and less of the good anime every season.
Not just seems like, they objectively are.
yeah its like they have had these things like mmo holiday special events with free access but they don’t allow people to search for free ad based anime so most times its pointless to even look around if anything is available. It sorta got better last year but never as good as it was with funimation which at least had a more predictable thing. Even that was not great though. Amazon actually has been upping its anime offerings and it appears to be something its going to continue to be expanding.
The writing was on the wall when Tubi and Pluto appeared.
Edit: If the same anime Crunchyroll has is also available in a free ad-supported streamer, nothing much effectively changes.
This is why I haven’t subscribed for years. Most of what was on it was already on most other services, and the stuff only on Crunchyroll wasn’t anything I was intetested in.
Honestly, I have been considering cancelling. The price is going up and the quality is going down. Any 2-bit translator can crank out what they are putting out with raws, screenshots, and voice to text. With the resources they are gleaning, this shit should sparkle.
I’m planning to get a Jellyfin server running and filling it up using torrents
Honestly, I’d prefer not to steal. I WANT the anime industry to have something for my appreciation.
To have it simultaneously decrease in quality AND go up in price is a slap in the face.
Anime was made popular by nerds sharing VHS tapes. A friend of a friend of a friend would get some episodes, another friend would add on to it, and it would end up a whole season on one tape that was a copy of a copy of a copy. The first time I saw the correct opening scene of the original Ranma 1/2 I was surprised by how the music didn’t actually warble from being copied. Digital piracy takes away from that because nobody is buying tapes.
Guess I could still buy merch.

Have you tried? These tools might not be up to the standard you think. Not even Youtube’s autotranslate stuff is actually any good.
Correct.
The new Crunchyroll subs are not good. I think my favorite example of terrible translations so far was the latest season of Dr. Stone changing the main character’s catchphrase “this is exhilarating” to “this is tempting.”
The multi-million dollar corporation just doesn’t care.
You have a point. The translator should know enough Japanese to be able to step in.
The translator would have to know enough Japanese to not just step in, but to verify every word that gets translated. At that point you’re not really saving much on either skill or time by using machine learning tools.
Sorry, I recall some really bad fansubs from back in the day. I can’t say whether the translator actually knew Japanese.
I think you two just said the same thing.
They have a point. The translator should know enough Japanese to be able to step in.
And i officially ended my subscription a long time ago
So I just need to make more free trial accounts then?
There was a time when Crunchyroll worked with yt-dlp. I miss those days.
Somehow their RSS feeds are still up, but you have to watch the shows using their shitty site. They’ve become just as bad as their competitors.
but you have to watch the shows using their shitty site
Most of the anime I torrent are ripped from CR, so no you don’t!
Yeah you can always sail the seas. I was just reminiscing about a time where CR let you watch it however you want, before it got enshittificated to its current state.
