You’re still cropping it. Don’t. You’re damaging the one way people actually use to find out where an image originated. It’s also the one way that survives no matter what happens to the file format or metadata.

Metadata will be lost whenever the file is hosted, proxied, thumbnailed, screenshoted or whatever. And because the internet in general aggressively strips this stuff, no-one really cares online unless the site is specifically about image organizing.

Instead it’s an organization tool mostly used for local image archives. The people who would think to look at metadata are a fraction of a fraction, and the same ones who would think to add it when it isn’t there for future reference.

Even though I use it myself for my local files, I’m not bothering to implement that for a bot whose main goal is to maintain LEMMY activity, and whose secondary goal is to drive clicks to the artists actual socials TODAY. Adding such metadata to my online posts has never, ever crossed my mind as potentially useful.

Especially on the fediverse, many instances don’t even serve the original url, but will insert a stripped and re-hosted proxy copy, for security reasons. Or a thumbnailed smaller file, for speed.

This metadata doesn’t live long once a file is online.

  • But why? Why would I do that?

Especially as literally no one ever looks at that on lemmy, and a fraction of the fraction of people who save the images do it.

Not to mention the poor survivability of such metadata when hosted, federated, proxied, thumbnailed, or worse, screenshotted.

If you want neatly organized files, I suggest writing a danbooru ripping script yourself.

Why would I bother to do that for you? As you’re essentially the sole case that would benefit.

    What do you even mean?

Does this metadata show up in lemmy in some way I’m not aware of?

Edit: I downloaded your webp, and I still can’t see what you’re referring to. Did you use a filehost that doesn’t strip metadata to prevent stuff like accidentally doxxing yourself through the geotag?
