I had expected an absolute gut punch for the final ep, but I’m happy that it took a different route: humans are alive and well, but can no longer stand the Earth’s atmosphere. Maybe they can re-adapt over time? Might take a couple of centuries though…
What a lovely anime. I think this was one of the best ones this season. I loved Yachiyo’s small, but visible growth. She wasn’t a typical ‘robot becomes basically human’ character. She did become more human, but still distinctly robot.
OP never got better though. Aiko doesn’t seem like a bad singer so it has to be on purpose, but it’s weird. I did get used to it though.
Damn it, the human immune system is just terrible. Still, if humans do return and set up a research facility on Earth, maybe they could start retraining their immune systems. Over a few generations, they might eventually adapt and be able to live on Earth again. I’m just glad we got a happy ending instead of some dark, existential one.
the human immune system is just terrible
Or just too adaptable to be highly specific.
they might eventually adapt and be able to live on Earth again.
Yeah! If they could ‘un-adapt’, I don’t see why they couldn’t re-adapt. No idea how much time that’d take though. They’ve been in space for a couple of centuries at this point after all.
If the problem is purely allergies, careful exposure to the allergens under controlled conditions should have some of them able to walk around without suits within a generation. Although they’ll likely need to carry hayfever meds and epi-pen equivalents around.
I gave this anime the three episode try and just couldn’t get into it. Glad to see that it’s found some fans though.
Start to finish, this show was something else. Loved every second of it.
That ending was absolutely brilliant - sort of low-key and open, but hilarious and appropriate too.
And the whole shampoo hat scene made me laugh hard - that was a great callback.
And with that, I say the series is a winner, from start to finish (and I’m already planning to rewatch it all the way through, maybe even starting tonight).
It has an odd tone, because it often feels sort of dark and sad and scary slong the way, but in the end, Yachiyo’s (and later Ponko’s) indomitable spirit and determination win out. Nothing comes easy for Yachiyo and the Gingarou, but she doesn’t give up. She just keeps plugging away, and it works out — maybe not in the way that she wanted or expected, but in a way that does work.
And now I’m just that much more certain that the oddly dissonant OP was very deliberate, and I don’t think I’d want it any other way. It says it’s okay if things aren’t quite what you’d expect or prefer — you can just set aside your expectations and enjoy it anyway.
@rikka@ani.social <- Does the mention work from piefed?
I think ponko goes for Glico Man pose here
So the OP is still off key after whole 12 episodes. Nice touch that episode names were the 12 commandments of Gingarou Hotel. I really was expecting yachio to die today but not a fate worse than death:
That mention does work! Hurrah!
