Watched Madoka Magica Magia Record (season 1). After reading the bad reviews, I’ve been putting this anime off for a long time. But as turns out it’s not that bad as people usually say.
Sure, some characters feel a bit like dummies… The plot sometimes resembles some disconnected stories… But still, Madoka’s surreal atmosphere is still very strong here. Personally, I liked Kaede Akino’s story with her tsundere friend. Did someone else watch it?

Yes, when it first aired, so I may be fuzzy on details.
It isn’t a bad show, but it isn’t quite up to the standards of the original, either, which I would bet on being one of the major reasons it gets dumped on. It does recapture some of the atmosphere, but Madoka Magica was pretty tightly written, while I found that Magia Record dragged a bit. Two cours for maybe a cours and a half worth of story.
Holding the last four episodes back for months after the rest of it had aired didn’t do it any favours either. I remember being somewhat lost when it resumed.
I “binged” Pokémon Origins - easy considering it is only 4-episodes long.
Well, turns out it is one elaborate ad for Pokemon X and Y😅 They were even released around the same time: October 2013.
Having said that, barring the inclusion of the Mega Evolution mechanic in this anime, I’d say this is the most faithful adaptation of the games I’ve seen. Pretty much everything is lore-accurate. Heck, they even included some references!

(Pity that they couldn’t squeeze in Youngster Ben’s quote about comfy shorts at some point😔)
Also, despite being an ad (or perhaps exactly because it’s an ad?), it was produced with such high quality.
It’s not the first time, but Pokemon was able to secure the big guns when it came to the casting of voice-acting roles; there were some sexy male voices😏
On the animation side of things, maybe it’s because my expectations were low (Pokemon Horizons doesn’t always have the best animation), but I was impressed by how well-animated this anime is. There is so much movements in what is clearly properly choreographed fight scenes. It was a treat to watch.
Lastly, when it revealed itself to be quite a faithful adaptation of the Kanto storyline by the first episode, I knew not to expect anything different story-wise. In fact, anyone who played one of the games should know roughly what to expect in each episode based on the titles alone.
But the onion-cutting ninjas still got me in episode 2. I am no good at handling
mild(?) spoiler
so it hit me hard.

As mentioned earlier, Mega Evolution is where this anime materially differs from the games. But, the way it was handled was rather smooth IMO. Not only did it not take away from my enjoyment of this anime, I’d say it actually elevated it.
In a nutshell: I enjoyed this a lot. It is clearly nostalgia-bait, meant to funnel old players into the new games, and I see it working. It had only 4 episodes to work with, but it still got many things right. At least a 9 / 10 for me (recency bias means 10 / 10 for now).
I wish we can see more of such adaptations from the Pokemon franchise. It need not be an adaptation of the games; it can be an adaptation of the manga too.
(I am aware it’s a pipe dream.)

Edit: just found that I am not the only one coping.
Ranma 1/2 S3: This show was a bit boring on S2, but S3 has some insane Mappa animation and the story is not so bad, so I’m optimistic.
Overgeared: This show started really promising, but now I’m pessimistic, because it seems like any other rpg slop.
Blue Box S2: Pessimistic on this one as well, I feel like I’m getting rage baited all the time. The progression is so slow and painful to watch. If this season would be packed, I would probably drop this one.
Last Boss S2: It’s okayish, better than average for similar shows, but I still think it’s plot as not good, easy to read and the animation is not that good as well.
Reincarnated as a Sword: still the same as S1 but better, Fran is still cute, the story is interesting and the OST and action scenes are enjoyable
Apothecary Diaries S3: I’m still waiting for a click, only setup episodes so far, I guess S2 had more action so I have different expectations.
I think S2 suffered the most from all the jumping around. We arguably should have had the Breaking Point arc last season.
I think we’re getting some great arcs in S3 though, the Tea Ceremony arc and guy with the giant mouth seem to be on the docket, which are some of my favorites from the original series. I’ve also heard that Mappa is gonna adapt the non-canon trans Ranma episode, which seems wild but it’s probably the most popular non-canon episode.
Tempau: This show started really promising, but now I’m pessimistic, because it seems like any other rpg slop.
Assuming that’s a typo for the untranslated title of Overgeared, my memories of the portion of the novel that I read suggest that it is indeed an undistinguished Korean VR tale.

I think the most distinctive point about it was that Grid developed a habit of treating the NPCs like actual people, to the point of getting engaged to one, but it’s been something like ten years and my memories are very vague.
I adjusted to Overgeared, thanks.
