It’s time for the seasonal OP/ED roundup! I want to hear about your favorite OPs and EDs for the season (alternatively, your least favorites!). If you are looking for a collection of them all for this season, you can find almost all of them at the link below:
Just a note that you can absolutely use this thread like you would any other general discussion thread. So, feel free to post questions/comments/recommendations like any other week.
As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).
The only song of note for me currently is “Let’s Just Crash” the second OP of Gachiakuta. Everything else in the shows I’m watching is so generic that I’m honestly unable to match a song to a show if I hear it.
I’m only watching two series this season - May I Ask For One Final Thing? (which is still entertaining) and My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me (which hasn’t quite reached the level at which I’ll drop it). They both have good if not great OPs, and the ED for May I Ask is completely different from the OP, but equally good.
Of past seasons…
I’m in the middle of doing something I haven’t done for years - watching an anime that’s so good but so tragic that I can’t watch more than an episode or two before needing to take a break with something else
The anime is Bokurano, and it’s very good and very difficult. It’s not just broadly tragic - it’s a fairly episodic story and every episode is bittersweet at best in and of itself. So I can’t make it more than an episode or two before I need a counter. Which has been kind of interesting actually.
The first anime I turned to as a counter ended up taking over, and I watched it all the way through in two sittings. Asobi Asobase is without a doubt the funniest anime I’ve ever seen. I mean - right this moment, all I have to do is think of the words “butt laser” and I start laughing again.
Then I spent a while watching an assortment of episode 1s in between episodes of Bokurano before getting hooked into Ao-chan Can’t Study, which is a good example of one of my favorite niche genres - wholesome ecchi. It’s essentially a romcom between two awkward people, with the gimmick that the FMC - Ao-chan - is awkward because she’s the only child of a famous erotica author who has no filter at all, so she has a very vivid imagination that leaves her alternately defensive and embarrassed, much to the dismay of the well-meaning MMC.
Then I knocked around for a bit more (in between episodes of Bokurano) before settling into Sono Bisque Doll, which has been on my TBW for a while now, and is low key and amusing and surprisingly cute.
And I’m about ready for another episode of Bokurano.
I’m not particularly impressed with fall season themes, but I did enjoy some of them.
- Kingdom S6 ED: “Houkou” by Sora Tomonari - my favourite ED of the season. I love both the visual part and the song.
- To Your Eternity S3 OP: “Fumetsu no Anata” by Perfume - another theme I watch every week. I find that sequence with water in the beginning really cool. The song is nice.
- Ginpachi-sensei OP: “Sakurakaze” by Botchi Boromaru - so fun and easy to sing along to.
- Sanda OP: “Adult Chick Children” by yama - the visual style is interesting to look at.
- Sanda ED: “Diary” by Soushi Sakiyama - sweet illustrations.
- With You, Our Love Will Make It Through ED: “Kimi ni Naretara” by Yoh Kamiyama - the song’s mellow vibe and the visuals with lovely colours go well together.
- Ao no Orchestra S2 OP: “Amadeus” by Galileo Galilei - I’m just happy to see my beloved Galileo Galilei performing anime themes again.
This season
Last week I dropped Towa no Yuugure, This Monster Wants to Eat Me, Ninja vs. Gokudo, and May I Ask for One Final Thing? However, I decided to stick with Yano-kun’s Ordinary Days. Third episode was an improvement for me, and then Kiyoko charmed me with her square mouth faces. Seems like Yano has finally fallen for her charm as well.
Songs
No songs from the shows I’m following this season stood out TBH.
Some parts of the following songs are kinda catchy, but none of them are strong enough as a whole for me to add them to my playlist:
- Reincarnation (OP) from Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?!
- Spurt Syndromer (OP) from Umamusume: Cinderella Gray - part 2
- Disguise (OP) from Gnosia
This Season
I picked up Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?!. This is slop, but it is so entertaining.
Even though it is slop, the characters are not braindead IMO. Characters behaved and reacted to the various situations with common sense for the most parts. I also like how it is not an isekai. Too many of such stories are needlessly isekai when they could have simply be fantasies like this one. Ironically, its opening song is titled “Reincarnation”.
I don’t see it being a frontrunner this season, but it’s enjoyable enough for me to not drop it.
Past Seasons
I completed the rest of Yuru Camp season 1. It is pretty cute and comfy. Nothing is happening, since it leans hard into the slice-of-life aspects, but the comedic moments are funny enough to keep my attention. I’d give it an 8 / 10
I don’t really have many shows I am watching this season, so basically my whole list is from shows I am not watching. Overall, nothing really jumped out at me as the OP/ED of the season, but there were still some fun ones mixed in:
Shows that I will watch eventually…
- One Punch Man Season 3 OP - Get No Satisfied! by BABYMETAL and JAM Project - I’ll watch this season at some point (my wife wants to watch it together). Despite the overall negative views of the season I have seen elsewhere, I do like the OP.
Shows I am not watching
- Chitose Is in the Ramune Bottle OP - Liar by Kucci - Some really pretty animation is the real standout while the music does enough to keep up with the visuals on display. For whatever reason this show took its animation super seriously as the ED is gorgeous as well.
- Ninja Vs. Gokudo OP - Sweet Disaster by MIYAVI - This one was a lot of fun. I have no idea if the show lives up to the OP, but it looks just the right amount of absurd.
- Ranma 1/2 OP - Wo Ai Ni by Suiyoubi no Campanella - Really enjoyed this OP. Lots of energy.
- My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me! OP - Uza Kawaikute Nani ga Warui! by Karubi Akami - This is so full of memes and references that it was a lot of fun to watch. Also, the song is super hyper to go along with it.
- Solo Camping for Two OP2 - Futari de Iyou ka by HOKUTO - This song is one of those vibes that can’t help but make you feel a little bit better.
Honorable Mentions
- Best use of Barrier-grid Animation - Ao no Orchestra Season 2 ED - Ao no Mahou by ChoQMay - Really neat animation effects through the use of one of the oldest forms of animation there was.
- Least Appealing Food - Style of Hiroshi Nohara’s Lunch OP - Gohan Tabe yo by Mega Shinnosuke - The CG in this OP did not really make this food look good. They would have been better served with just the live-action footage of food they used in the ED.
- Most Appealing Food - Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider ED - One More Time by Ryoji Tokito and TeddyLoid - This takoyaki looks delicious. And you know that it is putting in the work to be the best takoyaki it can be. I would totally start an evil organization with the goal of defeating it so that I can eat it. I really liked the OP as well.
- I can’t believe it’s not Disney! - May I Ask for One Final Thing ED - Inferior by Shiyui - This ED is just packed full of Disney costumes from beginning to end. It’s a good song too!
- She’s Back! - This Monster Wants to Eat Me ED2 - Taiyou, Natte Age Yokka? ♡ by Miko Yashiro - This one is sung by one of my favorite seiyuu, Fairouz Ai, and is even partly illustrated by her! She is just recently back after a bit of a hiatus due to her health, so I am just happy she is back.
