Mine’s Chobits - It’s ahead of its time, it has a banger OP, and Sugita Tomokazu is a great comedy MC VA.
It’s a little cheating, however. I liked it for other aspects and it only happens to have an ecchi tag in MAL.

My wife’s favorite is Kiss X Sis
From the “I can’t believe this isn’t hentai!?” end of the spectrum, I really enjoyed Interspecies Reviewers.
For something from the other end (let’s call it “Barely Ecchi” to go with the theme here), I would choose Agent AIKa. To me, Aika will always be a Best Girl contender.
But the real gems are found right in the middle: Keijo!!!, Shokugeki no Souma, Kill la Kill, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Prison School, To LOVE Ru, … All real good shows in their own right, and you get to have fun seeing the prudes loose their shit online. Win-Win.
I have a hard time conceptualizing PSG as an ecchi anime. Between the majority Tom & Jerry style animation and the much larger emphasis on toilet humor over leering at the girls, it just slides under my mental gate for it.
The Greats
- Gushing Over Magical Girls - Unexpectedly good comedy, character writing, action, and wholesome moments. While still being incredibly horny.
- Interspecies Reviewers - Overtly horny, but the humour is strong enough to stand on its own. Also better worldbuilding and more respectful towards women than 95% of anime.
Worth Checking Out
- Classroom For Heroes - Standard shonen fanservice slop: overpowered idiot hero inadvertently collecting an admiring harem. Nothing original, but I felt it pulled it off better than most.
- Immoral Guild - Sex comedy where monsters do naughty things to female adventurers. The male lead is a notable improvement over the the usual idiot horndog protagonist.
- No Game No Life - Borderline ecchi? Has a lot of fanservice, but it’s not the main focus. The non-ecchi content is quite good.
- Prison School - Sex comedy thriller. It’s pretty wild; incredibly kinky, but not always in a sexy way? You don’t watch this show to be titillated; you watch it to see how many times it can cross the line.
It knows to embrace its identity as an ecchi anime.
This is probably going to sound like the most milquetoast take but my favorite has probably got to go to Interspecies Reviewers. I went in expecting the stupidest raunchy antics and instead got some of the best worldbuilding I’ve ever seen for a fantasy anime. It also directly led to me checking out one of my favorite anime (for entirely different reasons), Interviews with Monster Girls AKA Demi-chan Kataritai.
Some honorable mentions, tho:
- Golden Boy, for a fun, raunchy comedy with a character who doesn’t turn into a total creep
- The Qwaser of Stigmata AKA Seikon No Qwaser for being unapologetically batshit insane throughout while still maintaining an air of being like a sex-filled FMA
- EDIT: Highschool of the Dead – very much not my jam and unfortunately unfinished due to the author dying but it seems to be a love letter to classic schlock horror movies while servicing the most ridiculous boob physics for its time

Given the premise, it was surprisingly tame. I would personally not consider it ecchi, and from what I remember, it was just a heartfelt romance show.
Fair, it’s been so long since I watched it I forgot it doesn’t go very far. Thinking back I didn’t watch much ecchi because the trope of the MC being too shy to go all the way always annoyed me.
Yeah, no wonder. It’s been 16 years, and the basic premise just screams “ecchi”. I mostly remember it especially because of the gap between what you think this will be and what you actually get. Getting a heartwarming (and tame) romance story from the show about a girl who wants to fuck a hundred guys was surprising.

im an anime fan but don’t do well at keeping up with the lingo so im not sure what ecchi is. I only recently learned what izakie means.
Ecchi comes from the romanization of how the Japanese pronounce H, which is used to denote more-or-less explicitly sexual tones and themes – I cannot say with certainty the cultural context of the word in Japan but generally I think it would be equivalent to an MPAA R-rating (where most anime would fall under PG-13 equivalent ratings), as actual hentai/porn is considered a step or three above ecchi.
As a side-note, I think you mean isekai, not izakie. Isekai is also a direct romanization of the Japanese word meaning “another world”, so if you ever come across pedantic arguments over what “counts” as isekai, it’s because of that.
thanks. yeah im an atrocious speller even in english. so can something be ecchi if there is no nudity? LIke I think a lot of harem type stuff is very sexually suggestive but sorta remains clean a lot of times. Im trying to recall if high school double D’s even had any.
Yeah, and as a matter of fact I think most ecchi anime don’t even show nipples (tho panty shots are often frequent). The furthest most ecchi anime will ever go is showing nipples, but generally you’re going to see things that are purposefully towing the line (barely-there swimsuits, groping, shirts/towels/hair just conveniently hanging down to cover important bits, references to sex toys and/or BDSM, et cetera.). The point of an ecchi is to be sexually arousing first, rather than just having a naked dark-skinned cat girl in an otherwise fairly serious action show about soul people with sentient swords. Most ecchi anime tends to be comedy as a result.
yeah then im thinking ecchi for me practically means anime because like it was the large majority of what I saw back when I had to go to conventions and anime clubs to see stuff and even now feels about half of it.
Okay, I see where the confusion lies: fanservice is what that T&A in most anime is called. Ecchi is when that’s the main focus of the show. Again, it’s like how in a PG-13 movie they’re allowed a certain level of “suggestive themes” like an implied sex scene, but if they’re too blatant/obvious/frequent they’ve got to go up to an R rating.
So, like,
- Yoruichi in BLEACH: fanservice
- a zombie anime where every girl’s chest is as big as their heads and the shirts cling impossibly close to their skin and bullets travel between their individually flapping breasts (Highschool of the Dead): ecchi
- naked wolf girl with no visible tits in an otherwise grounded story about Medieval commerce (Spice & Wolf): fanservice
- an entire anime based around gaining superpowers by drinking breast milk straight from the tap (Qwaser of Stigmata): Ecchi
- beach or onsen episodes: fanservice
- harem anime where the girls are constantly in states of undress: ecchi
The anime community (especially in the West) has had a bad reputation about making the fanservice front-and-center (for various reasons I won’t get into here) but I think one should make a clear separation between what you see at fan meetups and what the actual content of the anime is.
