They really should have specified “high fantasy” or something here, to justify excluding urban fantasy, steampunk, and the like.

It would also have been nice if they’d specified which version of a couple of the older series—Lodoss OAV reasonably belongs on such a list, but Lodoss TV not so much, in my opinion. And we won’t even get into Berserk.

I hated re:zero. the MC was abysmally annoying to the point I just wanted him to die fr and have the series be done.

mushoku tensi has an excellent fantasy world, wish we’d see more of it tbh.

I also really enjoyed tsukimichi, overlord, the water magician, clevatess, Gate, handyman saitou, the weakest tamer, spice and wolf, the faraway paladin.

Understandable. In the show’s defense, he’s a lot less of a piece of shit after the first season. I think him growing into a better person is one of the show’s main focuses, but boy do they start him at zero.

Meanwhile, the MC is exactly why I haven’t gotten into Mushoku Tensei.

also, in defense of re:zero, I lost all faith in the redemption arc of the MC after he basically abandoned Rem. He should have just ran away with her IMO.

yeah…Rudius is extremely flawed (and kind of a creep) but that’s what made his character development so good to me. he never really stops having flaws but he grows from them. I was also rooting for the supporting characters in his life. for all his flaws, he is stable, and I just want them to find happiness with his help.
