This season seems to be absolutely loaded with peak!

Frieren, Love Through A Prism, Journal with Witch… Frankly, the latter two are already some of the best anime I’ve ever watched – Journal with Witch isn’t even halfway done, either. I haven’t actually started on Frieren S2 yet but, judging from audience reaction (and having absolutely loved S1), I have no doubts it’s peak.

I assume this is just me actually looking for anime again, but I’m feeling like 10 years ago. Back then, it felt like whatever was coming out was just the best! It’s a nostalgic feeling, and it’s amazing.

What other recent anime have you watched that you think is peak? Do you agree that the ones I mentioned are incredible? Are there other anime this season that you think deserve more of a spotlight?

Love Through a Prism is a sleeper hit. Gorgeous backgrounds, actual British English dub that’s fitting for the Britain setting, and well-written character development.

Surprised to see no mention of Tis Time for Torture Princess, yet. S02 has been absolutely hilarious so far.

At the end of season 1 I felt the gimmick has been spread too thin and ran its course. Very funny in the first few episodes but grew stale fast. When I gave S02E01 a go I immediately got the same sense. Do they switch it up a bit in later episodes by adding a new gimmick/joke setup/etc. ?

See my other comment, I felt the same about S01, it felt repetitive. S02 definitely remedies that (so far). The main theme is still there, but the jokes are really good. I haven’t laughed that much in a while.

To be fair, S01 became a bit repetitive for me when binging it, so I started spreading it out after a the first half.

But S02 really came back strong and the first 3 episodes were absolute bangers and ep4 was good. Gonna catch up on the most recent one in a minute!

Journal With Witch is absolutely incredible, and Frieren is pretty good too. Someone else mentioned You and I Are Polar Opposites, and I pretty much agree with what they had to say about it. Another favorite of mine right now is the second season of Medalist.

Medalist is a story about a girl who wants to become a figure skater, but in the figure skating world someone who hasn’t started yet at 11 years old is basically a washed up old lady. She runs into a coach who also started late, and then they have an incredible sports anime together. The manga is marvelous. The first season of the anime adaptation was good. The second season seems to have fixed some of the minor animation issues the first season had, and so far I’m enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed the source material. It’s really fun.

Overall this season is nuts. It’s a good time to be an anime fan!

I heard about Medalist when it was first coming out, but it just didn’t appeal to me at all. I usually do like sports anime, but I think the fact it was a child kind of turned me off it.

      Indeed :DD

If it makes it any more appealing to you, it’s just as much about the coach as it is about the child; the target audience is mainly adults. Also, her goal is to compete in the Olympics. That presumably means she’ll be at least a little bit older by the time the series ends.

My favorite this season is most definitely You and I Are Polar Opposites. Omggg every episode is just soooo cute, and the characters are so adorable.

I’m also enjoying the 3rd season of Oshi No Ko (not surprised by this one as the series is in my top 3). Tune In to the Midnight Heart has definitely grown on me too! I started Champignon Witch and expected to like it more, but I kind of zoned out during the second episode. I’m going to try picking it back up this week!

I’ve been seeing some great discussions around Journal with Witch and will probably start that up before the season finishes!

I feel like the last few years have been amazingly consistent. Sooo many good ones getting new seasons, some great originals, and many thoughtful and beautiful adaptations. Sooo happy to see it!

The Invisible Man and his Soon-to-Be Wife is my pick for this season’s most adorable and uplifting. I have a bit of a soft spot for representations of disability in media, and you can tell the mangaka really did her homework.

An invisible man and a blind woman?! I can feel it… The cuteness… Overwhelming…

To be honest, I feel like the manga would be better. It’s just one of those premises that feel like they would play very nicely on a page, somehow.

I’m caught up with it. It’s very much an office romance, very cute slice of life. The cases at the detective agency they have worked so far are filler and plot devices at best. I guess it’s low-key trying to address discrimination … but in a world with invisible people and more it’s quite abstract. But did I mention that it’s very cute?

I’m watching fire force, ikkoku nikki, jjk, frieren, fsf, champignon no majo, and sentenced to be hero. Honestly one of the best seasons we’ve had in a long time, really blown away by the creativity. There’s a few others I want to start too

Do you agree that the ones I mentioned are incredible?

Definitely! At least for Frieren and Journal with Witch. I haven’t start on Love through a Prism just yet; have seen the high ratings and would check it out when there’s time

Are there other anime this season that you think deserve more of a spotlight?

Already mentioned in the weekly discussion thread, but worth pointing out again: the latest episodes of Gnosia and Medalist have been an absolute blast to watch.

I have also been enjoying Isekai Office Worker more than expected. It’s not like your typical isekai. In fact, when I think about it, I don’t think its target audience is your usual wish-fulfilment isekai enjoyer. I’d say its more drama? (politics?) with BL.

What other recent anime have you watched that you think is peak?

Wandance is both underwatched and underrated IMO. People seemed to get too hung up on the animation and such. If you are the kind of person who weigh story/writing/characters more heavily than artstyle/animation/CG/aesthetics, consider checking it out.

I loved Wandance! I have no idea why but I so looked forward to watching it every week. The ending song is great too, I added it to my anime playlist haha. After seeing everyone talk about Journal with Witch I think I’ll give it a chance. The description sounded too slice of life for me but I’m willing to watch an episode or two.

Checking what pops up on Grayjay’s home tab for Crunchyroll (mostly recent episodes) every once in a while, most seem either bland isekai, or bland fantasy. Or Pop Team Epic, which is just a fever dream, nothing added to the time spent watching it.

Of the recent ones that I found good, I can remember only Frieren (which I’m still going through season 1) and With You and the Rain, both slow burners consistent in their pacing, and that despite the considerable potential for drama, only have small touches of it.

It’s absolutely true that most anime is kinda bland and way too much of it is the same isekai slop however that’s what’s great about having threads like this! Most everything people are talking about here is excellent.

Now, been finding some older anime quite entertaining, like The Big O, Zach Bell, Yu Yu Hakusho (up to season 2…), and Pokemon.
