Hope everybody is finding things they like in the new season of anime. It is a Monday, so that means it is time for a new discussion post. Feel free to post questions, comments, criticisms here to your heart’s content. Some thought-provoking examples might be:
- My kid loves the PreCure series, so I was wondering if “Gushing Over Magical Girls” would be another good show for them to check out.
- Is the title “Delicious in Dungeon” referring to the food they cook or to how good Falin tastes to the dragon?
- How does one use healing magic wrong? Can you hurt somebody by doing your magic backwards?
As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).
I hope people are settling into the new year and new season of anime well. I have gotten to watch the premiere of a number of shows. Thought I would provide some quick thoughts below.
- Delicious in Dungeon - Not fully sold on this one yet, but I am willing to let Trigger cook some more.
- Gushing Over Magical Girls - Went into this blind and was really glad I was alone and using headphones.
- Chained Soldier - Watched this after Gushing Over Magical Girls and it felt way tamer than I expected so far given the buzz before the premiere. More is probably coming though given the setup.
- The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic - Loved seeing Rose and the VA did a great job. I had kind of forgotten a bit of the setup and that Usato was isekai’ed by accident, so it was a good refresher.
I have yet to watch Solo Leveling or start catching up on Apothecary Diaries, so nothing to say about them yet. Two shows that are starting this week that I am looking forward to Tsuikimichi season 2 and Level 99 Villainous Daughter.
Check out Sasaki to Pii-chan, it’s more than meets the eye.
Hmm, this one was not on my radar at all. I had seen some of the visuals for it and figured it was kind of a slice-of-life having a bird as a pet thing. However, I was not expecting it to be an isekai with magic and what seems to be storylines in both the original world and the fantasy world. As somebody that has consumed more isekai than is healthy for me, you have piqued my interest.
Looking more, I see that the story is by Buncololi. Ages ago I read a good portion of the webnovel for Tanaka the Wizard and it was genuinely very funny (and very lewd). So, I am going to check this out.
Yes, I am really liking this first episode of S to P-chan for the reasons that you described.
I gotta admit, I was pretty checked out until the fantasy stuff started. They just kept adding and adding. I personally liked that the main character was suspicious of everything about his new “job” until orientation.
I typically don’t start up with any series until a few episodes are out, at which point I watch 3-5 episodes in one go.
Based on those episodes I either drop or decide to finish a series once all episodes are out. I rarely follow a series episode by episode each week.
I’ll be doing that with Dungeon Meshi, though. Too excited to see that manga adapted. Join us over on !dungeonmeshi@ani.social, if you are interested!
I’m enjoying Apothecary Diaries. My sister pestered me into reading it, and now I’m clipping Maomao noises and sending them to her :D
Metallic Rouge - I think this one had the best first episode out of all of the anime that I will watch from the season. Great pacing, Great animation, unique soundtrack, great exposition, interesting world. I am rooting for production team to keep it up until the finale. (Side glance at Wonder Egg Priority)
- villaness lvl 99 - The bait in the first half was splendid. I will probably watch some more episodes.
- 7th loop - I got interested so I have read already 3 volumes of light novel
- mashle - just hit the gym and eat cream puffs
- solo leveling - ok I guess
- wrong way to use healing magic - ok I guess, looks like trauma team from cyberpunk
- sasaki and peeps - Great comedy, I loved the neighbor that was sitting outside the door. The emotional manipulation of a viewer was splendid.
- dangueon meshi - got me hungry. time to cook something delicious.
Villainess Lvl 99
I haven’t gotten to watch it yet, but the comedy in the source is splendidly stupid. It turns some off because of the denseness of the MC, but that is kind of the whole point. Hope you continue to enjoy it.
Edit: Loved it.
7th Loop
What did you think of the novels? Thanks to a particular person (cough Kadath cough) over in the manga community, I have been reading lots of Villainess stuff lately, might as well add an anime to that if it is from a good source.
Sasaki and Peeps
See elsewhere in this thread, but I am going to check this one out. Sounds like it really came out of the gate running.
Dungeon Meshi
I made a huge pot of curry this week to get in the right mindset while watching the next episode. Campfire Cooking got me hungry every episode as well.
Pon No Michi was boring.
It’s a CGDCT with mahjong, but the jokes weren’t landing, unlike “Sabagebu!”
I steered clear of this one due to my lack of any knowledge about Mahjong. I have similarly stayed away from a couple series (including manga) in the past that have focused on shogi since I don’t know anything about it. I am glad that it exists for the people with interest in it, but it still needs to be a good story.
I am familiar with Mahjong, and I still found it boring.
Of the more Japanese/Asian-centric game manga/anime, I hear Hikaru No Go, and Chihayafuru are both good, but I’m not motivated to watch either of them.
Hikaru no Go and Chihayafuru work because they’re more about the characters than about how the game they’re playing works (although in both cases, the anime does take the time to explain the game—I’ve never played go or karuta, but I had no trouble following what was going on). They take the standard coming-of-age concept (plus a love triangle, in the case of Chihayafuru), and do it well.
I have no intention of trying out Pon no Michi, though, since I have no reason to believe it will be up to the quality of those other series.
Absolutely happy that Mashle is back with a new season, it’s a god-tier anime that’s in-between One-Punch Man and Harry Potter. Obligatory hamstring magic OST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81NvJRS8F0E
Haven’t been able to watch much over holidays.
I did start a few episodes of Apothecary Diaries and instantly loved Maomao. Looking forward to catching up on that.
Wrapped up Girlfriend Girlfriend S2 and it was okay. I’m not sure I’ll continue if they make more.
Yeah, agreed on Girlfriend, Girlfriend. I remember really liking this stretch of the manga, especially with the focus on best girl Shino. However, I had trouble motivating myself to finish this past season. I can’t put my finger on the reason why. I think part of it is that it was airing at the same time as 100GF, which is a very similar concept, just cranked up to an absurd degree.
Re: Gushing Over Magical Girls
No, definitely not kiddie friendly. Hard ecchi with nipples and tentacle groping. Just missing exposed genitals and penetration to separate it from out and out hentai.
That being said, I did find it funny if somewhat one-note, and I’m looking forward to watching a 2nd episode.
Yeah, the example prompts are really just jokes to entertain myself and shouldn’t be taken seriously. I try to come up with a couple new ones each week with a couple exceptions like the year-end post or season kick-off post. One of my favorites from the early days after reviving this community was:
- Wouldn’t it make more sense if VRMMO-based anime were fully 3DCG? The games would be computer graphics after all…
Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san, Mr. Villain’s Day Off is a gag show about a 9-5 worker who just happens to be a senior officer of an evil organization, replete with Red Ranger bothering him on his off-day.
A bit one noted so far, but we’ll have to see how long the writers can make the schtick last.
- tis’ time for “torture” - I can’t watch this in good conscience. There was
recently2 years ago (fuck) a case of Hunger Strike of refugees in Poland for inhumane treatment. Also this show deprives all humanity from the people of this show. They deprive the princess of Free Will to go against her animal instincts. - The Unwanted Undead Adventurer - The technical ability of animators and composers is superb. Dragon is 2d, MC is 3D with VERY good shaders and animation. They probably have custom rendering engine. Sadly the story is meh and boring. I hope that this will pick up some more interesting plot points soon.
