Recent reports have announced that Crunchyroll, the largest anime streaming service, will be replacing Aegisub with Israeli Software, OOONA, to produce subtitles more efficiently. Anime fans across the world are disappointed with this collaboration due to Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians (via a report by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry).

Crunchyroll is also ignoring the needs of groups who require Closed Captions to understand the scenes better. They are isolating a large chunk of their audience in favor of AI-based subtitling, which defeats the point of a streaming service. Overall, this hasn’t been a great year for Crunchyroll, and this won’t be the end of it.

    Hey,

ended up trying to understand the debate about this decision.

What I got so far is that OOONA will not support closed captions and just… crappy subs?

Hope that won’t get me doomvoted, but what is the deal regarding the government and OOONA?

Can someone shed a light? I’m very curious and I cannot find any politcal stance from OOONA.

Crunchy Roll gets its subtitles by an Israeli company. A CrunchyRoll membership leads to funding genocide, cancel it today and pirate.

Looks like I need to get better at this again. Did it back in the early 2000s when there wasn’t a great way to watch anime… then picked up crunchyroll… now I gotta relearn where and how cause as shit goes… good things get worse /sigh

“Crunchyroll is also ignoring the needs of groups who require Closed Captions to understand the scenes better.”

    They’re called anime fans.

Closed captions and subtitles aren’t the same thing; closed captions specifically are made for people who can’t hear. That’s why they include things like “phone ringing”.

between that, the crappy AI subs, the shitty app experience, and a lack of choices in new shows I’ve already been pulling away from their services.

Sony really fucked things up, just like always.
