I continue on my quest to listen to bad Anime while I work; This week I listened to chaos;head and it was delightfully terrible. It was basically an audio novel, everything was expressed in dialog, I especially love the long pseudo science exposition dumps:

    spoiler

“we are putting a delusion in the blank spot on your mind!” I had to glance at my second screen from time to time to make sure that the otaku guy and his harem of psychic girls were battling… Dudes with back packs.

The final fight was also funny in how anticlimactic it was. I noticed it’s based on a visual novel or something and tried listening to chaos;child what seemed to be an adaptation of an alternative route but I could not do it a second time. Then tried Heavenly Delusion and that one seemed good, so I’m putting it on hold to watch while paying attention next.

Currently looking for another bad Anime to listen to

I’ve never seen anyone else looking for bad anime to listen to before! I have a few suggestions:

      • Tales of Byston Well: Garzey’s Wing is possibly the worst dub I’ve ever seen, and I don’t think it was a good show in the original Japanese either. Bonus points for having been directed by someone famous.
      • Cipher (1989): This is basically a 24-minute string of music videos with a bit of English dialogue (the last 15 minutes is behind the scenes stuff). It seems to expect that you’ve already read the manga because it doesn’t seem likely someone would enjoy it otherwise. Has a somewhat bizarre ending.
      • Crystal Triangle: I don’t remember this one too well. I think it was a pretty generic adventure where the main characters just go from place to place chasing a mcguffin and experience various anime action sequences. No clue whether a dub exists for it.
      • The Way of the Househusband: this one is a little sad because it’s based off a really funny manga but it’s basically not animated at all. I don’t actually know if there’s an English dub, but if there is this would be the perfect thing for someone to listen to but not watch.

Thank you for the recommendations! Garzey’s wing and way of the husband sound just like I am looking for, I ended up being mesmerized by cipher simply because I have a soft spot for 80’s shojou aesthetics and 80’s music, the vibes are immaculate!

I think I just found crystal triangle on youtube so it’s added to my watchlist!

Garzey’s Wing is the stuff of legend. I have only seen clips, but it has a bit of a cult following in my area because it is a recurring feature in the Bad Anime, Bad! panel at my local con.

I think I’ve seen a lot of these recommendations; and I have liked them a lot! I don’t think I could “just listen to them” in good conscience because a lot of these shows and movies have good visual language and engaging stories; I need to put Spy X Familly in my watch list because it sounds like a good show!

My platonic ideal for a “bad anime” to listen while working is something like “King’s game” (in fact I think that was the one that got me down this road.) It is so consistently bad that I don’t mind missing anything visually; It is so consistently outrageous and bat chist crazy that listening to it keeps me entertained, and it has that weird quality in scripting where everything is expressed verbally. I got so much stuff done that week; I don’t know why it makes me super productive.

Then there is another category I have; The “so outrageous it’s good” anime: I tried “just listening” to Baki son of ogre And I just couldn’t do it. The moment Baki took a child to his basement to watch him train against an imaginary giant mantis, I was all like “Ok; I can’t ignore this shit.” I ended up binging the series :,)

Shinesman, if you can find it, has an amusingly silly dub that you should be able to follow without paying too much attention to the visuals. They took an already rather silly sentai show parody and just let the English voice actors run away with it.
