I’m strangely enjoying Ruche’s progression. I can’t really put my finger on why. I think if it wasn’t for Ruche, I’d have stopped watching.
I predicted before that this anime would end up like DBZ, and somebody suggested that it would be somewhat different with a small spoiler that I won’t repeat here. But so far, it’s just like my prediction. Elymas gets stronger. Elymas defeats enemy. Enemy somehow isn’t defeated and gets way stronger. Elymas unlocks new superpower. Over and over.
But somehow, the presentation in this episode feels more like Dr. Stone to me. It’s just this one guy who knows all of the secrets, and he comes up with the exact right answer at every turn.
This game that the world is based off of is a very weird game that doesn’t work, IMO. The dream lord is not instanced, but shared between all parties, and it’s got a mechanic that only works when it kills a lot of adventurers? That just seems like a bad game design to me. Those MMO raids are always more about learning the boss’s mechanics, and then executing them. If the game is designed to always wipe some parties, all of that design will go to waste when the mechanic is understood. So, I don’t think it would be designed like that.
In an MMO, it is understood that players take notes and compare them. The economy of these games is partially based on information and the prize is largely social status based on reputation- there is an honor in being a member of the guild that achieved the first confirmed kill of a given boss.
(It is a feature (or a bug I suppose) that people in this world do not share information and instead hoard it jealously and we saw that in the form of the ordeal with the skill book.)
As to the question of the mechanics of this particular evolution, Elm is running into the problem that he is thinking about his particular situation from the perspective of someone playing a video game rather than being a person in a strange world that shares some mechanical similarities with a video game he is familiar with.
It’s for that reason that he cannot imagine why this boss could have been deliberately set up to be a trap since players in his video game never deliberately did that (this lack of trolling is somewhat implausible, but I digress).
But trolling is a huge feature of the world in which Elm and Ruche currently reside.
As to the specific purpose of this trolling, it is possible that it is intended like most information hoarding we has seen so far to be a type of gatekeeper behavior.
I actually don’t think so; it looks like there’s only one of these guys for everyone playing the game to share so it’s possible the moment it spawns people are already queued up to kill it.
Elm states that no one bothers doing this in the video game because there aren’t any decent in-game rewards (relative to the required effort) for defeating that kind of enemy.
As to the rewards for doing this, I suppose any economic justification is possible given that Elm hasn’t explained that much about what such a monster could drop or what kind of activities might become impossible if a party cannot successfully clear this kind of boss.
You’re right, but tbf there are some pretty shit MMOs in this world.
