It’s that time of week again in that it is a new week, which means a new general thread. This is the penultimate thread of 2023 and I am very, very sick. So, I am looking forward to all your anime opinions from the past year! Some example discussion prompts might be:
- The best anime I watched this year is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I rewatch it every year so that I can always say that. Checkmate!
- So what if Frieren had a dance scene? Beauty and the Beast did it first - 32 years ago! Frieren is so overrated.
- I don’t understand how I got sick since I always carry an umbrella with me to avoid getting even a little bit damp from rain. Has anime lied to me about what causes illness?
As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).
As I mentioned up top, I am not doing so hot this past week. It’s nothing serious, so I don’t need to start making mod succession plans or anything, but it is going to take some time to clear up. So, I have fallen behind on most of the shows I was watching this season because I am old and subtitles are hard when I feel like this. There were only three shows I watched this past week:
- Eminence in Shadow - really enjoyed this past week’s episode. It was heavily changed from the source, but it all makes sense for the most part and I don’t have too many complaints. The fact that Cid was playing the boss music at the end of the episode on the pipe organ was an incredible touch.
- Frieren - another great episode. I keep expecting the quality to drop in this show at some point because there is no way it can keep the quality so high for so long, but each week I am pleasantly surprised.
- Kenshin (2023) - I am not current on this show, but managed to work through a couple episodes in my backlog. I wrote down some of my thoughts on it over here already, so I will again plug the live action adaptations as incredible and worth checking out.
I hope you feel better soon!

Gonna copy over my question from yesterday, since that likely won’t be seen anymore:
Watched Psycho-Pass Providence today. Decent movie that feels like it actually tied in with the Sinners of the System movies, as opposed to S3. I dropped S3 after 3 episodes or so because it felt in no way like Psycho-Pass, especially not with Arata’s clairvoyance-like powers. Felt very off in a dystopian sci-fi setting that was pretty grounded overall.
I am still interested to see more though, so is it worth it after all to pick S3 up again? Does it properly pick up what was laid out in previous seasons and movies? Does Providence actually tie in plotwise, or does it only serve to explain why (SPOILERS*) >!Akane got locked up!<?
*spoiler tags often don’t work for me, so in case that happens for others too, hopefully this helps.
I have not watched Psycho Pass, but I checked out the subreddit watch order wiki and it looks like Providence takes place after season 3? Or at least that is the suggested watch order. Looking at that entry, I had no idea there was so much content out there for the series.
No, Providence is a prequel. Season 3 came out before, but Providence is chronologically before the 3rd season. I dropped season 3 due to reasons outlined in my comment, but wanted to watch this movie, since it didn’t seem to actually require knowledge of S3. It didn’t, but it did seem to build something up. I was curious if it actually delivered on that in S3 after I dropped it or if that build up was for a later project (that hopefully doesn’t require S3 either…)
so much content out there for the series.
There is, but sadly much of it isn’t very good and all of them pale in comparison to S1. S1 is amazing, S2 feels like a cheap imitation of S1, the 1st movie is decent, SoS is quite good as well, S3 sucks imo, and Providence is also decent.
