Yes I was thinking in those lines. If they deliverd garbage and then was annoyed that they got garbage back.
Sometimes I get this when I have unsaved changes to the file or the binary is not in sync with the code PEBKAC, and sometimes its the compiler 🙄
You get a bit numb to this when working on old code (10+ years), you know there’s plenty crash bugs and logic bugs in the code and you know you will introduce a few of them while fixing bugs and adding new features.
The only thing that can give comfort is automated tests and plenty of them! Unit, integration and especially system level for old code.
Good companies priotize this, and can refactor code without breaking too much, other companies learn to live with the bugs breathing down their necks.
Ages ago downloaded some code for handling volume control for me to extend, it was a VB developer using c and they did the same, I just closed it and found some other code to use. 🙄
Compiled languages at least say “hey don’t do this” and fail or warn you with “this is a bad idea”.
But hey I still use python, but also pylint to help me avoid mistakes, I just disable the style part for my own sanity.

I can suggest using pylint, it can find a lot of the syntax errors.
