Oh dear – I just looked it up because I didn’t want to talk completely out of my ass and I just learned it originated on 4chan as a bit of a derogatory term. Somehow the racist overtones never really sunk in, I’d just heard it once or twice to refer to written Japanese and thought it sounded funny.
