Does bamboo really that combustible as we expected? It is no doubt that bamboo is much more combustible than metal one, but the ignite temp of a bamboo stays around 250°C, and its fire-spread rate isn’t fast enough to set an entire scaffolding alight in ten minutes.

Instead, someone uses a net that is not flame retardant, because they are cheaper for obvious reason. Also, flame retardant is not enforced to use but is suggested under guideline, which is a law’s grey zone. As the net have a low ignite temp, a small fire source can quickly lit the net in few minutes

The scaffolding is constructed for a maintenance work that value US$38.5 million, which is way overprice due to bid‑rigging and biased selection, yet, the net they are using is so cheap that is not flame retardant. Moreover, someone in years ago has asked the governor for the choose of non-flame retardant net, but only come with a reply that it is not required to use when only low fire risk work is performed per guideline. And the main contractor have also came up with a questionable lab report for the net’s flame retardant property. Also, they block the windows of resident with highly combustible polystyrene to protect the windows itself is a terrible choice.

tbh, I am disappointed with the government itself. Their monitoring on bid-rigging is nearly zero, and the patrol on construction safety is useless. And they are still putting the blame on bamboo scaffolding itself but not the poor monitoring they are offering.

My condolences to the victims of this tragedy.
