Unpaid internship is modern day free labor. At least the law in my area said that minimum wage is not applicable to “student interns” whose internship is a part of the program offered by the university, or “Work Experience Student” whose internship is less than 59 days and without a “employment relationship”.
Apart from internship (practical lessons) arranged by the university, it is really difficult to find a internship that is unpaid.

When I was a student I did a job interview and when I found out it was unpaid I just got up without saying anything and walked out.
You should have asserted dominance by T-posing while getting up.
