Yeah this latest version of Lemmy seems to be humming along well oiled. It’s working really good for me.
Haha. You triggered me, now for a vicious verbal attack…
I’m posting a lot more here than on Reddit. There was less motivation to post there, for one a post can get buried in minutes so it can be like talking to a wall. Then there’s the hostility if a post does get play.
After giving Reddit the punt I became active about a month ago, but I had browsed Lemmy initially quite some time ago. Back then I was like, “Oh this is neat, but all I hear are crickets.” Can’t say that now, it’s getting busy. There’s more content than I can review in a day now, and that’s just from the front page in Subscribed view.
That would be very handy, I have a couple instances I use and would like to synchronize them. Also synchronize the inbox and profile data. That’s something that should be in the code base.
Lemmy doesn’t federate with Mastodon (yet), but I believe kbin can. Mastodon can federate with Lemmy and kbin. Unless you really like that Twitter style interface, I feel Lemmy or kbin offers a better experience. Lemmy and kbin use the Reddit style which I think is a better format, but that’s also subjective. You can go to any kbin or Lemmy instance from your browser and take a look at it. You don’t get all the features until you create an account and login, but you can get a good idea.
Goes along with the whole idea of Open Source. If you don’t like something, change it yourself. I’m not an expert admin or programmer, but I do have some limited experience. I’ve actually taken advantage of the do it yourself potential of FOSS a few times myself, hosted some servers, modified some software. Nothing big, but little tweaks here and there. It’s very empowering.
Storage is the issue, all of these instances are volunteer based so we want to avoid burdening them with storage costs. For example when renting a VPS (as many Lemmy instances do) the monthly rate jumps pretty quick with storage capacity. Some instances do allow small local uploads, the one I use allows 100kb and that limit is based on operating cost.
There’s definitely some features I’d like to see as well. I mainly access Lemmy using a desktop browser so that’s my perspective.
Foremost for me is a compact view. I’d really like to be able to view more posts on a page using a much smaller font with no extraneous line spaces.
A tip box that shows content when hoovering on a post would be great for me.
The ability to group duplicate communities would be a big help.
A setting to open all links in a new tab would make navigation easier. There’s middle mouse and context menu on right mouse, but I’m so used to left mouse I can’t beat the habit and constantly lose my place.
I need a global default for my sort order, or more granular options. You can specify it from the user settings, but it only applies to the front page.
I know from talking to admins when pbpBB was really popular that fighting spammers and unsavory bots was the big workload in running a forum. I’d expect the same for Fediverse instances. I hope a system can be worked out to make it manageable.
As a user I don’t have a big problem with mechanisms like applications for the sake of spam control. It’s hugely more convenient when an account can be created instantaneously, but I understand the need.
I do wonder how the fediverse is going to deal with self-hosting bad actors. I would think some kind of vetting process for federation would need to exist. I suppose you could rely on each admin to deal with that locally, but that does not sound like an efficient or particularly effective solution.
That’s going to jump again when Apollo quits working on Reddit, if they don’t back down on this API thing. It’s going to be an exodus, probably break the internet (so to speak).
Got a laugh out of that, Rodent theme adds ten horsepower.
