Yeah circles and other 2D patterns – or simply plain writing – do have very ancient origins. I think all cultures in their early stage attributed a magic character to drawing and writing, which are inherently 2D activities. This is also reflected in other anime/fantasy common themes, like the item that comes to life because something has been written on it (golem), or the creature that gets increased powers because someone gives it a name…

Indeed the idea is old, and inherent in most early cultures in relation to drawing and writing, which were seen as “magical”. And this is reflected more generally in anime, for example in the very common theme of “getting increased powers upon receiving a name”.

What I was wondering was why the sudden increase, because today it seems that all fantasy anime use this device. I had not thought about the computer-graphics factor, and that makes a lot of sense!

I loved how some episodes, especially in the first series, simply didn’t have a “conclusion”, so to speak – one never knew if or how the chaos that had upsurged was solved in the end. The linked video is a great help too. I think I’ll give a shot at the remake.

It’s been one of the poorest “animations” I’ve ever seen; not in the One-Punch Man series, but in anime in general. Not only there’s lots of just panning and zooming, but the image that’s panned or zoomed has much lower quality than the manga. Lots of frozen facial expressions with only the mouth moving, it reminds me of Clutch Cargo or of the cut-out animations of Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam. Of course all anime do this to some degree, but this so extreme that you become completely aware of it.

Blame or no blame, one reason or another, it’s J.C. Staff that made this, and it sucks. I wonder how an animation studio can do something like this; it affects the studio’s popularity and can only have negative consequences down the line.

Spy x Family in roughly one week, and One Punch Man in roughly two 😭 (joy).
