I am all for spawning up your own instances. The thing is, that’s not always feasible for everybody. Hence my comment ;-)

I am not on lemmy.ml but I have gone through the great Twitter migration. But yes, the servers are most likely smoking right now with all the extra traffic. Not to mention the fact that the underlying code isn’t tested for this amount traffic.
Moral of the story, patience. Server upgrades are on its way and additional code fixes will happen 😊
Yes… I know that Mastodon also has this “issue”. You can migrate to a new profile, and on your old profile it was say something like “this person has moved to X”, but you can not move your post history.
And what do we do with that lemontree?
Yeah I totally get what you mean. Video is in that regard binary (it works or it doesn’t). Audio on the other hand is very subjective, it works but it very muffed or very screamy.
When life gives you lemons, you make Lemmy? 🤔
Hehehe, I can definitely see what you mean. Doing stuff in your spare time is fun, but the moment it it becomes a “must do” thing… It’s like doing your taxes.
Yes I am a man and yes, dev work feels like a vacation to me. 😅
But in all honesty, I still do sound engineering but only as a volunteer in a small local venue about twice a month. That’s fun, no stress, just doing things I love to do. Meeting cool people, making sure the crowd enjoys the show. Fun stuff.
Oh man… For me, that would like #goals.
In my time as a sound engineer, I learned to say no. Compared to sound engineering (as in, live sound engineer), being a dev is a walk in the park.
No more 16 hour work days, no more tours with getting only 6 hours of sleep each night. No stressing out over a technical issue 15 minutes before show time. I could go on and on :P
I am currently a Dev (used to be a sound engineer), but I can definitely understand that!
Completely agree with you there! But at the moment, federation is happening but a lot of the server’s are smoking quite a bit. So search might not be as reliable as intended.
Luckily tools like https://browse.feddit.de/ exist! So you search externally for communities.
Edit: Added section
I think it’s kinda impossible to not create redundant communities. For example, people might not know about !technology@beehaw.org for example, and therefor create one at their local instance.
But I think that in a few months, you will see that certain communities at certain instances will be the “defacto” in a particular field.
Just out of curiosity, where can I find those stats?
If I’d had to guess, woodworker or watermelon farmer.
They both operate on the same protocol called ActivityPub. So that mean it is possible for Lemmy users to interact with Kbin communities (or magazines, as they call them) and for Kbin users to interact with our communities.
Technically it’s also possible for Mastodon (since that also uses ActivityPub) user’s to reply to posts here… It’s not very user friendly, but it is possible.
