15 hours agoI used Reddit when the only thing they asked of me was a username and password. When they told me I could clear my account’s name for ‘suspicious activity’ by providing an email address, I stopped using Reddit altogether. If there is a class of ‘bots’, I am of it.

The issue is that I and most other people are not technical enough to audit such a system and be satisfied that identifying info was not retained or intercepted, or the code furtively changed or disguised etc. etc. If what you’re suggesting can be done, that’s neat, but it makes no difference to me because I cannot know when it is and isn’t being applied or if it’s being comprehensively applied, and I will go on assuming that if I show my ID, it is leaked or intercepted instantly. And knowing I have shown my ID would distort my political discourse for sure.
If some people are not certain whether I’m an astroturf, that’s a tradeoff I can live with.
