  • Glad to see someone else with this view. When I pop my head into the Anime and Manga communities I saw people calling stuff that interested me low-quality and trash. It’s perfectly fine to have your own set of preferences and express it, including dislike of things! But it did make me wonder if there was anyone like me who might enjoy what others consider trash sometimes, or even who might like the same stuff I liked, or if I would be mostly alone on Lemmy in liking what I like. It is nice to know I’m not.

I will admit that I don’t think I have much of a quality filter at all. But I do have a finely-honed “will I like it?” filter.

  • I also appreciate how his family plays a role. (It is probably hinted at in the title, “Dad’s Been Reincarnated,” not “I’ve Been Reincarnated,” so you’ll probably expect to hear from his kid.) A lot of times people in the past life are present just to set up the character’s personality/outlook and never brought up again. I don’t mind that, but seeing something else done is still cool!

Also, double points for what seems like a healthy and peaceful family relationship. Mining family dynamics for drama is very easy (and totally understandable given the sheer amount of people with at least some amount of familial strife in their lives), so it is always nice to see a protagonist with a healthy home life.

  • Haven’t watched this, but judging from the reactions people are giving I feel like it might be a yandere thing that isn’t coming off as that properly? There’s folks with consensual noncon fantasies and all that who might be interested. What about it makes you say “trash” specifically, and if you are suggesting hentai is it because this anime gets explicit/fanservicey?

My tone might be coming off judgmental but I do not mean it that way, just trying to figure out if I would like to watch or not. I am an adult who understands and respects boundaries. I also enjoy messed-up problematic dynamics in fiction sometimes.

  • I came here for the entire premise of a dragon maid, and stuck around for the found family and the slice of life. The sexualization I just kind of blatantly ignore—kind of helps to be a woman not sexually interested in my own gender, in a world full of sexualizing my gender, so I have a lot of practice with it. (I’ll usually try to avoid sexual fanservice, but if I like something/think I’ll enjoy enough I seem to be really good at just hitting the IGNORE button.) It’s fun to watch. I’m cognizant of the issues but I certainly do not expect everything I watch to be perfect. Also, since you are saying the portrayal of women is an issue… ignoring the fanservice I do not really see anything wrong with the female characters as characters here? Am I just stupid? I especially like Kobayashi. Really not a fan of Lucoa’s entire thing with Shota, but in the end, unfortunately some women are indeed pedophiles. Very realistic character defect.

Not a fan of the loli/shota stuff. However I am more “ehhh, I wish this wasn’t there” than “absolute disgust,” probably because in the end, the characters are pixels, no real kids are coming to harm; so when weighing whether or not to watch I still come down on the watch side.

For what it is worth, the anime’s sexualization and underage sexualization seems to be toned down from the manga.

  • A normal amount, but I also have a tendency to take things at face value right off the bat.

I did recognize the Shota name thing but at most that seemed like a single playful jab, not the whole thing being satire. And the “lolicon character is actually 943948 years old!” thing is common enough that it just passed me by. I didn’t see enough parody to call this satire. And I have not seen anyone engage with this any differently than they would with non-satire content, so…

Why is it concerning that I didn’t see this as satire? Does it imply low media literacy, or something negative about my morals?
