Is there a way to add servers on the same app? Like if you use Lemmy. Zip , could you add other instances/servers and switch between them just as easy as you do communities? If this feature exists could someone explain how to me?

If not, this needs to be a thing. Add to that pixelfed, piefed and mastodon posts…

If it’s all decentralized, what would prevent us from having it all in one single app. With maybe siloing of the different servers, so the serverwide rules are still inforceable.

But essentially, the all feed would really be all.

I was under the impression that i could see any and all post/community provided it doesn’t violate the rules of the server I’m on. I’m figuring out this isn’t quite the case…

Yet i get the feeling there’s a lot I’m potentially missing. I keep seeing dead links, seemingly abandoned posts/communities with little to no activity…

I just don’t know for sure. Also how do people figure out which server to join? How do you know for example of a certain community you’re interested in is present in server A or b?

Maybe this is a really stupid question, and the answer is so obvious its self-explanatory. But i have to admit I’m lost

Why do you want different Lemmy accounts? Are you using them for different purposes (like one for news, one for tech content etc.)?

I used to do that, then I switched to Piefed that supports feeds for that purpose. The Lemmy.zip team runs Piefed.zip.

https://old.piefed.zip/ just got a sidebar with feeds once your are logged in, that makes it easier to switch between them.

You’re on lemmy.zip, and on most lemmy servers - assuming the code hasn’t been tampered with too much - you can see which fediverse instances it blocks. And lemmy.zip doesn’t block a lot with just 9 blocked instances. Compare that not the lemmy server my account is on, feddit.dk which has 611 blocked instances.

(used this cursed regex for counting)

    ^(?!.*(?:\.develop|\.service[^s]|\.main|\.neets|\.gleasonator).*).*\.\w+\s*[^\.\d-+]

But oh, I might’ve misunderstood a bit, you’re talking about being able to see non-lemmy fediverse content? Yeah, that’d be neat.

I agree, I think a good design for a client would be, you can add any number of accounts on different instances, and it shows the content available to all of them, with some kind of indicator of which accounts a given post or comment can be seen by. The post/comment fields should have a dropdown menu so you can select which account you are posting with, and if one is on an instance that isn’t federated with where you are posting to, it is greyed out. I haven’t really tried a lot of lemmy clients though so maybe this already exists idk.

Different apps for different purposes. My phone is my “one central app.” Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Lemmy CAN cross-post, but it’s clunky. Infosec is for the hackers, blahaj is for LGBTQIA+, lemmy.ml is for socialists, lemmy.world is for casuals, and lots of other cozy servers for aesthetic. Start a community you want if you can’t find it. Or post to the “dead” ones and revive them. I use the web app and just browse all posts for one endless feed.

You definitely can add a few accounts to most of the 3rd party apps, like I use Boost and I have a bunch of accounts in there, Lemmy and PieFed accounts too.

You’re already on lemmy.zip and that’s a good one, you already have access to pretty much everything. Just subscribe to a bunch of remote communities, you definitely don’t need an account on every server.

    Have you browsed here: https://lemmy.zip/communities?listingType=All&sort=TopMonth&page=1

Yet i get the feeling there’s a lot I’m potentially missing. I keep seeing dead links, seemingly abandoned posts/communities with little to no activity…

Which ones? Share some examples. Some stuff is just old and there might be newer replacements we can suggest, or some communities are too niche and you have to go a bit more general. Remember we don’t have millions of users (yet?)

You could also try PieFed since it makes it easy to follow Feeds/Topics which can group many communities together so it’s easier to find stuff. PieFed can also follow Mastodon content. Or try Mbin since that’s the best if you want to follow Lemmy/PieFed/Mbin/Mastodon content from one place.

You can also add multiple accounts to… your browser.
Lemmy basically never logs you out anyway.
The browser supports features most apps don’t.
      Bookmarks, history, multitabs, adblock, etc.
At the expense of what… push notifications?

Using reddit without a third-party app was unthinkable, but lemmy UI isn’t actively hostile.
But yea, like forums of old, it’s not immune to dead links and stuff like that.

Reddit isn’t immune to dead links either lol, even text posts I often see were deleted and can’t read them anymore. There are plenty of dead subreddits too.

Depends on your instance and with what others it’s federated - as far as I understood
